The population surge of Shediac in the past five years to 6,664 people is 511 more than in the previous census, which also resulted in population growth for New Brunswick cities. "If you only look at the place, we're 20 minutes from Greater Moncton, it's so easy to drive and we're right on the Northumberland Strait river," LeBlanc says. People gravitate from rural areas to more urban ones across Canada, but particularly in New Brunswick, the latest five-year census figures, published Wednesday, indicate. But many of those people don't want to leave their pastoral environment in a big city for life.
