Kitimat, in the North Coast region of British Columbia , Canada, is a district municipality. It is a member municipality of the central district of the regional government of Kitimat-Stikine. The Kitimat Valley, along the Skeena River Valley, is part of the most populated urban area in northwest British Columbia, which includes Terrace to the north. During the 1950s, the Aluminum Company of Canada (Alcan) designed and developed the town. On June 6, 1952, its postal office was approved. Kitimat's urban area is 93.68 sq mi (242.63 km2). In one of the few large , flat valleys on the coast of British Columbia, it is situated on the tidewater. There were 8,335 people registered in the 2011 census.
The main employer in the municipality is aluminum producer Rio Tinto. Secondary participants are local government, schools, small industry and utility / retail. Technology, the manufacture of petrochemical products (methanol and condensate) and the processing of metals are secondary core operations.
