Located at the heart of the Athabasca Oil Sands, the world's third largest oil deposit and single largest crude bitumen reservoir, Fort McMurray is a community with over 66,500 laborers working in its oil booming industry, attracting professionals from around the world every year. The city is so far north that, at the end of summer, the sun scarcely sets. Winters are long and ultra-snowy, but it also means it Fort McMurray is a perfect location for Northern Lights. The drive to the closest major city, Edmonton, takes 4.5 hours.
The public and Catholic School Districts of McMurray also represent the interests of children in Fort McMurray for primary, kindergarten, and secondary education. Every school district provides a range of programs such as French immersion, creative arts or a dedicated science and technology center, but only FMPSD provides the Advanced Placement program at one of their campuses. École Boréal is the only Francophone school in the city on Abasand Drive and goes from pre-kindergarten to grade 12.
